Here it is! Gorgeous pictures featuring eastern bridal looks created by Lyana Gibert of The Art of Beauty are now featured at Calgary Bride online magazine.

Few cultures have weddings as extravagant as the people of Pakistan do. Not only are their weddings carried out over 4 days with lavish feasts and parties, (including the now very trendy henna (mehndi) party) but we also see some of the most beautiful and vibrant fashion, as well as unique styling for hair and makeup.

Lyana Gibert, a talented hair and makeup artist and owner of local bridal business, The Art of Beauty, teamed up with a local Pakistani designer Bushra Zarrar, owner of LaRegalia Couture, and together they styled up two models to give us a glimpse into the beauty and style, and culture of Pakistani weddings.

Weddings traditionally follow Islamic traditions. However, some ceremonies have a slight Hindu influence. Some of the customs include: Dholki (sing and dance with bride), Mehndi (henna party), Baraat (procession to the brides home), Nikah (contract ceremony), Mun Dikhai (the unveiling of the face), Rukhsati (sending off), Walima (marriage banquet), Shaadi (wedding ceremony), and Shab-i-Zifaf (the wedding night). The bride typically wears purple, pink, or red lehenga, gharara, or shalwar kameez that are greatly adorned in beads and gems. However, many brides now wear other bright colours aside from the original traditional colours as well. It is customary for the bride to wear much heavy gold jewelry, usually with large stones, (as a model, I can assure you this jewellery is even heavier than it looks! These brides are amazing). It takes many hands to get one bride dressed and ready properly, the dupatta must be secured in a certain way, the lehenga must be the right fit, the right colour, the henna must be painted properly, the bride must look the picture of perfection for her husband to be, especially for a ceremony like “the unveiling of the face.” The models Cathy and Theresa were a joy to work with. Lyana styled each one to match the dress she was wearing. With this cultural style, contouring and intense eye makeup is a must, it is essential as a bride that you hire a professional for such skill. The photos were taken at Crossroads Furniture Gallery utilizing their stunning array of home décor and furnishings. They were taken by the talented and humble Csaba Diglics, an amazing local wedding photographer. There’s also a behind the scenes video taken by videographer Oleksandr Nadoloshko. The Good Ol’ Days

The Good Ol’ Days

art Beauty Calgary Canada Creative Hairstyle makeup artist style Vendors review

Remember the days when women “stayed at home,” and did all the cooking, cleaning, never had a job or career, just stayed at home and raised the children: Women were all expected to be typical Stepford Wives. These images were depicted in famous works by many artists, most notably Norman Rockwell.
The inspiration for this pinup shoot came from the satirical (humorous) spin put on these images, for example the ones featured here:

These inspired Lyana so much that she decided to collaborate with the best, locally, to recreate these images with her own added flare. Together with Csaba Diglics (photographer), A Vintage Affair (clothing), Just Cake Me (vintage cake) Oleksandr Nadoloshko (Videographer) and the stunning Summer Morgan of Sophia Models Int.(model), they recreated this funny, timeless beauty that every woman can relate to.

Lyana used her exceptional makeup and skill to transform Summer’s face into a porcelain perfect, image of a vintage house wife. Her hair was curled with a victory roll in the centre of her forehead… And from there the magic began.

As you can see, the images are absolutely pristine. This is the result of an amazing team working together, and naturally Csaba and Lyana’s amazing talents together.

Working with Csaba is such a pleasure. He’s well experienced in both the fashion and wedding industry, and his work speaks volumes about his talent. His pictures are truly breathtaking. His post production editing isn’t over exaggerated, it makes everyone look their absolute best (especially when teamed up with lyana’s perfectly styled hair and makeup). I have yet to see an image from Csaba that I don’t like, every single photo he takes is magical. (The ones he took of me are still some of my favourite). Not only is he professional but also very kind and has a sweet nature, he truly is a joy to work with. I highly recommend his talents.

Speaking of recommending talents, Lyana has put together a list of trusted professionals in the wedding industry available here: theartofbeauty.ca/calgary-wedding-vendors

And lastly behind the scenes Oleksandr caught some candid footage of how this magic actually takes place! Stay tuned for that!

I can’t express enough how in awe I am of this shoot. Lyana truly sees beauty in every aspect of the world and not only show cases it, but creates a masterpiece. Lyana truly is artist in every sense of the word. I look forward to the next inspirational beauty you have for us!

Why a Sugar Skull

Why a Sugar Skull

art Beauty Calgary Creative Hairstyle Halloween makeup artist seasonal style

Everyone is in love with the Sugar Skull makeup craze. But where did it all begin? What exactly is a Sugar Skull? And where can you go to get one done on your face PERFECTLY for Halloween here in Calgary?

Most of us know that Sugar Skulls are associated with the Mexican festival the Day of the Dead (Festival De Muertes) but few know what they represent or how they came to be in the new world.

Sugar art was brought to Mexico by Italian missionaries back in the 17th century. Sugar Skulls are actual sculptures of sugar in the shape of a skull. They come in different sizes, colours, and are adorned in glittered confectionery accoutrements. They are edible and sometimes are consumed, but that is not why they are in high demand the month of October, prior to the Festival of the Dead.

It is believed, that at midnight, October 31st, the gates to heaven and hell open and the souls of loved ones lost may reconcile with their families. More specifically, the first night (Nov 1st) the souls of children (Angelitas) are released, the second night ( Nov 2nd) adult souls are released. Small sugar skulls adorn the graves and ofrendas along with toys and candy, food and flowers for the young children spirits. For adults, larger sugar skulls, alcohol, food and flowers are placed on the graves and ofrendas (altars). The holiday is becoming rapidly adapted by North Americans, perhaps because we typically don’t have an occasion to honour the dead except for funerals.

The past couple years Sugar Skull makeup has become the most sought after design in the October months. If you’re anything like myself the chances you have to pull this look off alone are slim to none.

Where can you go to get an amazing Sugar Skull in time for your Halloween event here in the Calgary area? Local Calgary Makeup Artist Lyana Gibert will come to you. If you want to look picture perfect, a Sugar Skull is not something you want to attempt yourself. Please trust in the skilled hands of a professional and I assure you you’ll have photos and happy memories to last a lifetime.

Featured in the photos is the lovely Mycah who I have had the pleasure of walking several catwalks alongside. Here Lyana did a 3.5hr application of makeup, using a combination of airbrushing (to make the nice white base) and hand painted detail, and fixed 120 individual Swarovski crystals on Mycahs face. Anyone who has seen swarovski crystals knows they are so much more than just a stick on glitter. They are not plastic, they are actual gem stones. The face paint used is Kryolan(http://us.kryolan.com), for those of you who didnt know, it’s one of the top face paint products available.

By using the best, you can assure that you will look stunning on your big night out. Once everything is applied you have a beautiful glow, every photo taken will be perfect, and no matter how much you dance your face will stay in place. If you want to stand out from the crowd this Halloween, I suggest you schedule an appointment with Lyana.

For bookings for this Halloween Lyana is offering stunning makeup applications starting at only $200. You can have this exact look (Sugar Skull) for $350+ crystals. Keep in mind all the products used on you are top of the line, L’Occitane cream,(http://ca.loccitane.com), MAC (www.maccosmetics.ca), Makeup Forever (www.makeupforever.ca), etc. The crystals are from Swarovski (http://www.swarovski.com)

Whether you’re doing photos, an event, or both, this Haloween, I suggest you book with Lyana to ensure you look your very best.

This past Sunday, September 14, 2014, was the big Calgary Bridal Expo http://www.facebook.com/CalgaryBridalExpo at the BMO Centre. I was privileged enough to come along with Lyana Gibert, local Calgary Makeup Artist, and be her model for the show and represent THE ART OF BEAUTY Lyana and I got together at her place for hair and makeup before the show. We started bright and early at 7am. I had a lovely hairstyle, it was swept to the side and pinned in such a way that allowed my hair to cascade down my right side in long curls. My makeup was a gorgeous, bridal makeup. This style (romantic and warm, with pink champagne eyes and soft pink lips) is a common look for a lot of brides so that is what we showcased. Lyana did a more natural “day look” on herself, focusing on the eyes using wings, and swept her hair up. We all met up at the tradeshow and got to work for the day. I was the walking, talking model, telling everyone exactly why they need to invest in a proper makeup artist for their big day. And I’m going to tell you all exactly what I told them. ” Your wedding is the ONE day, everything is about you. The ONE day. Cameras follow you like paparazzi, you are certain someone will get a bad photo of you at some point… but… When your hair and makeup is done properly, and I mean PROPERLY (set, contoured, powdered ) your face should reflect the light in all the right areas to ensure you take a flawless picture every time. Do you want to be the “Bride on a dime,” or do you want to be the bride that has the wedding of a lifetime? You get what you pay for my darlings, so when it comes to your wedding, please spare no expense. Lyana specializes in luxury makeup, bridal makeup, by using her you are guaranteed to look your absolute best on your special day. We had two live demonstrations at the show. We pulled the name of an upcoming bride called CJ and did her makeup for her. And we had another model come to sit and have a demo of hair and makeup on her. Our other model was Olga Bronetskaya, who came straight from Russia to help us out today. Also, the dress I was provided to wear came from Russia as well. Check out her makeover below:

Calgary bridal expo 2015

We were so honoured to be featured in the same show that boasts some of the most prestigious bridal supplies and service providers here in Calgary. The show had a great attendance, I don’t believe in the entire 7 hours we were there that we had a dull or spare moment. We also encouraged others to take note of two people/organizations that contribute on a regular basis to the stunning work Lyana does here at THE ART OF BEAUTY. The two we credited were CSABA DIGLICS PHOTOGRAPHY, http://www.facebook.com/csaba.diglics who does all the photos for Lyana. And A VINTAGE AFFAIR, http://www.facebook.com/AVintageAffairCalgary who provide her with gorgeous outfits and accessories to accent the photo shoots and make the perfect picture. (and that I get to model! woohoo!) (And am also modeling in the very top image) All in all the show was a great success. Stay tuned for our upcoming adventures! Here’s a pic of the whole team, Lyana, and the two models, myself and Olga.
