Why a Sugar Skull
Everyone is in love with the Sugar Skull makeup craze. But where did it all begin? What exactly is a Sugar Skull? And where can you go to get one done on your face PERFECTLY for Halloween here in Calgary?
Most of us know that Sugar Skulls are associated with the Mexican festival the Day of the Dead (Festival De Muertes) but few know what they represent or how they came to be in the new world.
Sugar art was brought to Mexico by Italian missionaries back in the 17th century. Sugar Skulls are actual sculptures of sugar in the shape of a skull. They come in different sizes, colours, and are adorned in glittered confectionery accoutrements. They are edible and sometimes are consumed, but that is not why they are in high demand the month of October, prior to the Festival of the Dead.
It is believed, that at midnight, October 31st, the gates to heaven and hell open and the souls of loved ones lost may reconcile with their families. More specifically, the first night (Nov 1st) the souls of children (Angelitas) are released, the second night ( Nov 2nd) adult souls are released. Small sugar skulls adorn the graves and ofrendas along with toys and candy, food and flowers for the young children spirits. For adults, larger sugar skulls, alcohol, food and flowers are placed on the graves and ofrendas (altars). The holiday is becoming rapidly adapted by North Americans, perhaps because we typically don’t have an occasion to honour the dead except for funerals.
The past couple years Sugar Skull makeup has become the most sought after design in the October months. If you’re anything like myself the chances you have to pull this look off alone are slim to none.
Where can you go to get an amazing Sugar Skull in time for your Halloween event here in the Calgary area? Local Calgary Makeup Artist Lyana Gibert will come to you. If you want to look picture perfect, a Sugar Skull is not something you want to attempt yourself. Please trust in the skilled hands of a professional and I assure you you’ll have photos and happy memories to last a lifetime.
Featured in the photos is the lovely Mycah who I have had the pleasure of walking several catwalks alongside. Here Lyana did a 3.5hr application of makeup, using a combination of airbrushing (to make the nice white base) and hand painted detail, and fixed 120 individual Swarovski crystals on Mycahs face. Anyone who has seen swarovski crystals knows they are so much more than just a stick on glitter. They are not plastic, they are actual gem stones. The face paint used is Kryolan(http://us.kryolan.com), for those of you who didnt know, it’s one of the top face paint products available.
By using the best, you can assure that you will look stunning on your big night out. Once everything is applied you have a beautiful glow, every photo taken will be perfect, and no matter how much you dance your face will stay in place. If you want to stand out from the crowd this Halloween, I suggest you schedule an appointment with Lyana.
For bookings for this Halloween Lyana is offering stunning makeup applications starting at only $200. You can have this exact look (Sugar Skull) for $350+ crystals.
